HISTORY
Behind the scenes of Gladstones, the popular city centre Bookshop & Cafe, is a Christian Charity seeking to address spiritual and social needs in Liverpool. The Gladstone Trust was founded in 1820 by Robert Gladstone, (father of Liverpool's famous son and Prime Minister W.E.Gladstone). Registered as the Charitable Institution House Charity No.232909, it is now popularly known as the Gladstone Trust or Gladstones in honour of its founder.
AIMS AND ORGANISATION
Our Mission Statement is as follows: "The Gladstone Trust - an effective and faithful witness to the Christian Gospel in the heart of the City of Liverpool." The object of the Charity is the advancement of the Christian Faith and Education, and the relief of persons in need.
These objects are pursued through the proclamation and demonstration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the distribution of Bibles and Christian Literature and the aiding of persons in need by every means of support considered beneficial and available to the Trust.
The Charity operates in fellowship with Christian churches in Liverpool and is a member of “Together for the Harvest” representing many churches from all the major denominations.
In collaboration with Christians and Churches in Liverpool, the Trust seeks to reach out to persons in need, especially the homeless, those addicted to alcohol and drugs and to the sick.
GLADSTONES OUTREACH
In 1998 the Trust, in consultation with other Christian organizations, launched a new ministry to the homeless in Liverpool. The target group includes the homeless and the disenfranchised in general, those suffering alcohol and substance abuse, persons with no fixed abode and people who find themselves on the streets. Many of the teams’ activities are carried out by volunteers from Christian Churches, offering friendship, advice and resources for the homeless. Two churches are especially involved in outreach to the homeless and utilize the Gladstones to direct help to the homeless. They are Sefton Christian Fellowship (www.cfn.org.uk/churches), who provide meals for the homeless and seek to offer friendship and support. South Liverpool Vineyard (www.southliverpoolvineyard.com) who do outreach to the homeless on the streets, providing friendship and advice, clothing and other physical needs. These teams work in tandem with the Gladstone Trust and often people seeking help are referred to Gladstones Outreach in order to seek rehabilitation.
DOORWAY TO RESTORATION
Gladstones Outreach has become an effective door of hope to those with problems of drugs and alcohol. Since its foundation in 1998, numerous people suffering addiction have been referred to Christian Communities (www.betel.co.uk, www.asociacionreto.org) dedicated to the work of restoration and they are now building a new life free from addiction.
A BASE FOR RE-ENTRY
After a recommended period of rehabilitation between 12 to 18 months, the Gladstone Trust recognizes that individuals returning from rehabilitation need support as they re-enter Liverpool and Merseyside. The Trust therefore is hoping to develop means of support, that can help individuals return to family life, accommodation, training and work.
